Some people in favour of weddings of extravagance and pride say that big weddings are condoned in even the Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) who had instructed that a Walimah should be kept even if a goat is slaughtered for the purpose. From this Hadith it is clear that there is no harm in feeding a large number of people at a wedding function.

The argument tendered in support of these present-day wedding functions is baseless. The modern-day western-style wedding function has no resemblance to the Wall  mah which Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam)  instructed.

There is no harm in inviting a large number of people for a Walimah if one can afford to do so. But, the wedding functions held today are not the Sunnat Walimah feasts. The Shariah does not prohibit a large number of persons participating in a Walimah. The Shariah’s condemnation is directed to the un-islamic features and haraam acts which take place at wedding functions and for which the motive is nothing but pride and show. The evils attendant to present-day wedding functions are discussed elsewhere in this issue of The Majlis.

Also, it should be remembered that according to the hadith the best nikah is the nikah in which the least expenses are involved.
